So many candidates are faced with anxiety and fear when they go for interviews, the lack of self-confidence is written all over their faces. As a recruiter who interviews hundreds of candidates monthly, I have met candidates who are so confident, they were able to sell themselves excellently. Others lack the ability to express themselves properly. Here are some tips for you on how to gain confidence for an interview!

“Know your onions”

Like the popular saying goes, you have to know your onions. What knowledge do you have about yourself? How well can you sell yourself? Are you convincing enough? Have you done proper research about the role and the company you have applied to? Are you confident about what you are offering or bringing to the table?

If you can answer these questions positively and confidently, you are on your way to having a successful and convincing interview session!

Put some thoughts to it! – I mean the Interview questions.

There are times when candidates attend interviews without properly preparing for and thinking about the appropriate answers to likely interview questions. Review interview questions that are related to the role and company you have applied to and practice!

Recruiters want good, convincing and genuine answers and this is what they expect when they ask you questions in an interview session. A lot of times, they can tell when you are lying or faking answers, they can tell when you’ve just crammed some seemingly ‘impressive’ answers for them. This does not work!

Hence, you want to provide answers that are related to your experience and which are genuine and truly reflect your personality, values and work ethics. This is absolutely important.

Appearance is Key – Dress appropriately.

Dressing well improves your self-confidence and how you feel about yourself. When you look good, you feel even more confident and this better complements your level of preparedness. For instance, if you have put in enough work and research in preparing for the interview, as mentioned in tips 1 and 2 above, ensure that you dress well enough and look good for the interview. All of these put together can improve your self-confidence to a very large extent.

We hope these tips have been useful! All the best as you go for your next interview.
