rules for writers

The rules for writers. At a time as this when technology has taken over the local means of communication. Writing becomes of utmost importance. You could write to market a product, provide a business service or simply entertain by writing. To attract a greater audience, you must write better content.

Here are 10 tips for aspiring writers:

1. Write for yourself first, then worry about the audience:

When you write, perhaps, a story, you’re telling yourself the story. When you rewrite, your main job should be to take out all the things that are not the story.

2. Don’t use passive voice:

Passive voices are for timid writers. Instead of writing, “The meal was prepared by mom”, write, “Mom prepared the meal”. Doesn’t that sound better?

3. Avoid adverbs:

As much as possible, avoid adverbs. Consider this sentence “He closed the door firmly”. This is not a terrible sentence, but ask yourself if ‘firmly’ really has to be there.

4. The magic is in you:

The magic of writing is in you. You don’t have to become a great writer before you start out. Eliminate that fear and start.

5. Read, read, and keep reading:

To be a better writer, you have to read any, and everything readable. You have to read widely, continuously improving on yourself as you do so.

6. Turn off the television:

The last thing you need as a writer is a TV. If you must become a better writer, I’m afraid, your favorite TV series has to go.

7. Stick to your own style:

One way to fail as a writer is switching to different writing styles. Stop imitating and stick to your own style.

8. You become a writer simply by writing and reading:

If you’re waiting for a writing class to attend or a seminar before you start writing, you’re merely wasting time. You learn best by reading a lot and writing a lot which becomes the most valuable lessons you teach yourself.

9. Don’t write for the money:

If you think writing is about making money and money alone, you’re in for lose. Don’t write for the money if you don’t want to get heartbroken. At first, it might not really pay off, but subsequently, it will.

10. Writing is about getting happy:

As earlier stated, writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, making friends, etc. It should be about enriching the lives of those who will read your work and enriching yours too. Seeing people happy as a result of your work will ultimately make you happy.

Which of these rules do you like best?
